And it keeps happening across similar fields. Something is changing and I'm curious to see what's next.

The mass layoffs continue. Corsair announced layoffs impacting around 90 employees as part of ‘restructuring’ to balance its falling revenues. So, why are revenues falling? There’s no easy answer, but one reason is that Corsair no longer makes the best, well, anything. And the product stack is too confusing and bloated. CPU Coolers? Well, have fun picking the best one out of 100 options with the same name. The H150i RGB ELITE, H150i Elite Capellix XT Black, H150i RGB (not elite), H150i RGB PRO XT, or the H150i ELITE LCD XT 🤯🤯Model numbers/names lose all their meaning if you keep reusing them. Next, PC cases. They’ve become a super competitive space with players like HYTE, MONTECH PC, TRYX now offering compelling options at attractive price points. PC cases are one of those parts that usually get relegated to the scraps of a Build budget, so the category itself is more price sensitive than others. Another issue is bloat-fueled confusion. Some case SKUs (let’s say the 7000D) will saddle you with simple case fans that connect to the motherboard’s fan header. Some feature RGB fans that plug RGB into a proprietary box, which then plugs into another proprietary box. Fan connectors connect to the motherboard. Yet others (remember this is the same price point and case model) house fans that plug everything into a proprietary box with a proprietary connector. On to memory. The Dominator and Vengeance product stack has become too confusing and overpriced. Upselling the same memory modules with XMP/EXPO tags just contributes to choice paralysis. I don’t know of a single builder using Corsair memory in their builds today, while 5-6 years ago, nearly everybody did. Next, PSUs. This component is a saving grace for the company as it hasn’t toyed with reliability to increase profits. That said, it needs to tier, categorize, and market its lineup better so people immediately differentiate top-tier, mid-range, and budget. Also, stop iCUE-ing it! Now, my pet peeve: iCUE connectivity. If you’re developing something proprietary, stick to ONE and not thousands. And don’t make it obsolete in a couple of years. Anyone who bought into your ecosystem will never touch your products again if the latest thing you launched uses yet another proprietary thing that doesn’t work with the old proprietary thing. When I started building PCs, #Corsair was one of the easier recommendations with a simple, top-notch product stack that just worked and performed well. Today, not so much. As the year has progressed, other companies are also cutting jobs in the thousands. We rank the biggest tech layoffs in 2024 by the number of workers affected in each company. Data is sourced from Layoffs.fyi and is current to August 15th. Multiple rounds have been combined for some companies.Dell and Intel Are Downsizing Workforce Amidst AI PivotInternal sources at Dell say the company will cut 20,000 jobs this year, after an initial 6,000 in March. This particular arithmetic comes from inside the company. HR employees told Business Insider that Dell plans to bring its employee count under 100,000.RankCompany# of Employees% of Company1Dell26,000202Intel15,000153Tesla14,500104Cisco10,150125SAP8,00076Toshiba4,000N/A*7Paytm3,500N/A*8Getir3,300N/A*9PayPal2,585N/A*10UKG2,20014*Not available. Figures rounded to nearest hundred in the graphic. As of May, 2024, the company employed roughly 120,000 people. Dell has not yet confirmed a number, but at least 12,500 people in sales and marketing teams have already been let go in August. If implemented, this could be the company’s largest layoffs ever. The cuts are being driven by an AI-first restructure that is expected to continue to other parts of the organization.Meanwhile, business headwinds are prompting big layoffs at Intel and Tesla. Intel’s foundry business is struggling, with nearly $7 billion in operating losses in 2023. They’ve also lost key clients in the PC business and haven’t yet made a splash in the GPU segment. After they cut 15,000 jobs at the start of August, Intel share prices fell to levels not seen since July 1997. This chipmaker’s current fortunes are in stark contrast to now-market leader Nvidia who has reaped significant revenue from their AI segment. Finally, Tesla is facing slowing demand in 2024. Their vehicle deliveries fell for the first time in nearly four years. Stiff competition in China has also led to price cuts that have put pressure on profit margins. The company cut 14,500 jobs in two separate rounds in April.Learn More on the Voronoi App Nvidia’s Jensen Huang has committed to no job cuts in the last couple of years. This might be a key reason why he ranks first on the Highest and Lowest-Rated CEOs (according to professional social network Blind). The post Ranked: The Biggest Layoffs in Tech So Far in 2024 appeared first on Visual Capitalist.INFOvia Visual Capitalist https://ift.tt/2pcSPh8August 20, 2024 at 11:51AM

The recent waves of layoffs at industry giants like Intel, Dell, and Cisco have sent ripples across the tech sector. Many of our friends find themselves grappling with uncertainty, trying to make sense of the rapidly changing landscape. This moment of upheaval reminds me of the timeless lessons from *"Who Moved My Cheese?"*, a book that offers profound insights into how we respond to change. In the story, the characters—mice and Little people embark on a journey to find cheese, which symbolizes what we all strive for in life: success, stability, and happiness. However, when the cheese is moved, their reactions vary, reflecting the diverse ways we approach change."The Cheese and Our Attachment to It"We all have our own idea of what "cheese" represents. For some, it’s a job title, financial security, or recognition. When we achieve it, we naturally become attached to it, finding comfort in its presence. But what happens when it’s taken away? When the cheese is gone, it’s easy to feel lost, even traumatized. In the story, the mice—Sniff and Scurry—act on instinct. They don’t overanalyze; they simply adapt, sniffing out new opportunities and racing towards them. Meanwhile, the LittlePeople—Hem and Haw—are paralyzed by fear, clinging to their old ways and beliefs. Their thoughts echo sentiments that many of us might recognize: *“Why should we change?”*, *“We’re special, this shouldn’t happen to us.”*, and *“We’re entitled to something better.”*"The Danger of Staying Still"One of the most poignant lessons from the book is that if we do not change, we risk becoming extinct. In our careers and lives, doing the same things repeatedly and expecting different results is a recipe for stagnation. The world is constantly moving, and so should we. If we don’t adapt, we may find ourselves left behind. As we navigate these challenging times, it’s crucial to regularly "smell the cheese"—to stay attuned to the changes around us. This awareness allows us to anticipate shifts and prepare for them rather than being caught off guard when the cheese is suddenly moved."Moving Forward"The layoffs we’re witnessing are undoubtedly difficult, but they also present an opportunity. This might be the time to reassess what our "cheese" truly is and whether we’re in the right maze to find it. It’s a moment to pivot, innovate, and seek out new paths that might lead to even greater fulfillment.Remember, change is inevitable, but how we respond to it is within our control. We can choose to adapt, to move forward, and to embrace the new opportunities that lie ahead. After all, as the book wisely puts it: *“Sometimes things change, and they are never the same again. That’s life! Life moves on and so should we.”*Let’s take this as a call to action—to be like Sniff and Scurry, always on the lookout for new opportunities, ready to move forward even when the path is uncertain. The cheese may have moved, but so can we. #Whom*ovedMyCheese #SpencerJohnson #Layoffs2024
